Tuning for beginner sport shooters: what to upgrade first

After careful thought about which firearm to choose, your dream CZ has finally arrived. Congratulations on your choice. But you took it out to test at the range and found that it is not quite right: it does not fit your hand properly, the sights are unclear, and you are fighting the recoil. Before you think you made a mistake, read on to see what you can do about it.

first tuning

Where to start your first tuning

As a new shooter with a fresh license, you first need to learn proper habits for holding and safely handling the firearm. You also need to get comfortable with your new gun. I recommend focusing your first tuning on aiming and a proper grip. You can move on to managing recoil and getting a lighter trigger pull after that.

Do you not have a dedicated sports pistol?

Polymer CZ models

I am not surprised at all. Few people buy a CZ TS 2 or CZ Shadow 2 as their first gun, since those models come ready for competitive shooting right out of the box.

That is why we will look primarily at how to adapt more versatile CZ models like the P-10C, P-10F, P-07, P-09, or CZ 75 P-01 for sport use. They cost less, and if you do not yet know how much you will shoot, you made the right call.

Tuning for sport shooters

You picked your gun based on how well it shoots and what you plan to do with it. We focus this article on upgrading your firearm for sport and hobby shooting.

WARNING: If you plan to enter practical shooting matches, your upgrades must match the rules of your specific division. For example, we cover IPSC rules in the article How to build the ultimate IPSC handgun.

Sights – what you cannot see, you cannot hit

Factory sights on CZ models that shooters pick for their first guns are usually all-black or have white dots. You definitely need to swap them for sport use because they are too slow to find.

Ideal sights for sport shooting

sights - fiber optic front sight

A fiber optic front sight and a grooved rear sight make a very popular sport setup. This combination keeps stray light out of your eye and lets you aim accurately.

You have a wide sights selection to choose from, including tritium for low light, fiber optic, and standalone front sights and rear sights. It depends on what works best for you.

What about a red dot?

Red dot

You can also swap your iron sights for a red dot. It brings several benefits:

  • with iron sights your eye focuses on the front sight while the rear sight and target are blurry, but with a red dot you just look for the red dot on the target,
  • it helps you aim with both eyes open so you do not squint,
  • it helps correct certain vision issues.

WARNING: Red dots are not allowed in every match class, so check the rules beforehand.

2 ways to mount a red dot

If your model is optics ready from the factory, you can mount your optic using an optics ready plate. And if it is classic model, without the Optics Ready cut, you need a red dot mount that fits in the rear sight dovetail.

Grips – hold it tight

A correct grip is the base for accurate shooting. What should it look like?

  • your hands wrap all the way around the grip,
  • your trigger finger rests with the pad of the first joint straight on the trigger and pulls straight back,
  • your support hand palm has enough room on the frame to give you a strong push against recoil,
  • your forearms, wrists, and shoulders stay relaxed so aiming feels natural and easy.

During a match, you do not want your pistol sliding around in your hand. Matches are stressful, and your hands will sweat. What can you do?

The advantage of metal frames

With all-metal models like the CZ Shadow 2, CZ Shadow 2 Compact, or CZ 75 P-01, you can pick grips from materials like brass or aluminum, different textures, and various thicknesses for a proper grip. Heavier brass adds weight to the bottom of the gun and shifts the balance point. Plus, you can get them in many different colors.

Grips and polymer models?

CZ P-10 Grips

On the CZ P-10, CZ P-09, and P-07, you can improve your hold with interchangeable backstraps in sizes S, M, and L to fit your hand. I recommend adding grip tape as an extra anti-slip step. You can find them in the CZ P-10 Grips category, or under CZ P-07 accessories and CZ P-09 accessories.

Base pads – more rounds, fewer worries

Changing factory base pads is almost a must. Different models use different base pads: rubber on the CZ 75 SP-01 or you can find plastic base pads on the P-10, P-09, P-07, and CZ Shadow 2. The CZ Shadow 2 Compact comes with an aluminum base pad, but it does not hold extra rounds.

Extra magazine capacity is usually the main reason to switch. Along with holding more rounds, they also lengthen the base pad grip, so you can better reload.

Heavier base pads also drop free faster when you reload thanks to gravity, and they protect your magazines from damage when they hit the ground.

Watch out for magwell fit

A magwell is a funnel that widens the grip opening for fast magazine changes. It is an upgrade for experienced shooters who already have their reload skills down. Match rules limit where you can use them, and adding one to your gun can bump you into a different division.

If you decide to get one, remember to buy base pads that fit inside it. Because base pads can be made in two variants: to fit magwell, or to not fit magwell.

Handling and reloads – what makes life easier

Factory controls on some guns feel too small or stiff.

Mag release

That includes the magazine release, which is the small button that drops your mag. An extended mag release lets you drop your mag without shifting your grip. This is a very common upgrade on CZ models.

Thumb rest – a miracle or a trap?

A thumb rest gives your support hand thumb a shelf and might look like a great way to fight recoil. It is popular mostly on all-metal sport guns. But it has downsides:

Until you learn a proper grip, a thumb rest can lead to bad habits like pushing the gun to the side and pulling your shots off target. Keep in mind that some match rules do not allow them. You also need to think about your holster choice, especially if you use Kydex.

Trigger mechanism – do not get carried away

Guns leave the factory set up to fire standard commercial ammo reliably. That means a heavier trigger pull, and you will want to lighten and smooth it out if you start shooting matches.

Do not get too carried away because the trigger group is delicate. If you push it too far, your gun can turn into an unsafe tool or a machine that causes light strikes.

Striker-fired CZ models

spring kit

On models like the CZ P-10, you change the striker spring and trigger spring for lighter ones. I recommend swapping both at the same time using a match kit where the maker tuned the spring weights to work together. If you only change the striker spring, you get a lighter trigger pull right away, but the take-up and reset stay the same.

Hammer-fired models

For the CZ P-07, P-09, and CZ 75 P-01, the main spring and trigger spring handle the trigger pull weight. The main spring controls how heavy the trigger feels to pull. The trigger spring handles the smooth movement and finger reset. I recommend changing both at the same time.

Pure sport guns like the CZ Shadow 2, CZ TS 2, and CZ Shadow 2 Compact have triggers that feel so good right out of the box that most beginners see no need to touch them.

TIP: You can find all the tuning springs you need in the springs category.

Do not try this at home!

Even though a lighter trigger sounds great, never make permanent changes to internal parts like filing the sears. Leave that work to a gunsmith.

If you use springs that are too light, your gun might not have enough power to set off standard primers. Even worse, a light trigger pull can lead to an accidental discharge.

DPM recoil spring system

Recoil reduction system

I recommend a DPM Recoil spring system to almost everyone. The multi-spring guide rod setup softens how the gun feels when it cycles and protects the frame from hard hits, which helps your gun last longer.

A smoother cycle helps you keep your sights on target and makes shooting much more enjoyable.

What to upgrade first?

That is up to you. Pick what bothers you the most, whether you want clearer sights, a better grip, or a smoother trigger. Quality parts can turn a standard gun into a great sport shooter.

Remember that as a beginner, you need to learn proper grip, aiming, and safe gun handling before you buy advanced parts like a magwell or thumb rest. Make sure your trigger is light, but always safe and reliable.

Then nothing will stop you at the range. Good luck with your setup and shoot straight.
